Cool Season Lawn Seed Varieties from Great Aussie Lawns

A lot of homeowners don’t know what type of grass they have or want, they mostly answer they want green grass.

Fair enough!

But there are factors to consider in achieving that green grass. Most importantly...

  • What part of Australia do you live in? Is it a cool or warm climate?
  • What season are we in?
  • Is it time for cool season grasses?

What are Cool Season Grasses?

Unlike Warm Season grasses, which yellow off in Winter in coolder states of Australia, Cool Season grasses can remain green all year long and can survive the summer months with irrigation.

Cool Season grasses are the types that thrive in Autumn and Spring in Australia.  You might see them springing back to life now after a hot summer.

Councils, sports ground and parklands often use cool season grasses to oversow in Autumn (called Renovation).  They do this to keep colour and growth at a time when warm season grasses are yellowing off. This is a sensible approach for owners of warm season lawns like couch and kikuyu.

Planting Tips and Caring for Cool Season Grasses:

  • Like all seed sowing, make sure you keep the seeds constantly moist during the first few weeks of germination.
  • The peak of summer is not the time to sow cool season grasses. Spring and Autumn are ideal times.
  • Since growth slows down during the cooler seasons, mow your lawn less and raise your mower height
  • Winter lawns are more vulnerable to fungal problems so avoid watering unless your grass is very dry.
  • Weeds still thrive in the winter months. Remove weeds by hand or by spraying them while they are young. Use Ravage or Bow and Arrow.
