Varieties of Lawn in Australia: Kikuyu, Fine Ryegrass, Couch, Tall Fescue and more.

There are many types of Lawn Seed that will grow well in Australia.  They're broken up into Cool Season Grasses and Warm Season Grasses:

Cool Season Grasses are typically finer leafed in comparison to Warm Season Grasses.  Cool Season grasses grow straight up and require more watering in the hot months of the year.  It's best to plant cool season grasses in Autumn and Spring when there is enough warmth in the soil for germination to appear, but there is long enough for establishment before the change of season into summer or Winter.

Fine Ryegrass

Fine Ryegrass is a clean cutting, fine textured grass that establishes quickly from seed. It is ideal for a premium lawn that will tolerate low mowing and when blended with fine fescue or bluegrass forms a high quality turf. View our Fine Ryegrasses here.

Bluegrass

Bluegrass is a dark green, medium textured cool season grass that forms an attractive, soft lawn. It spreads by rhizomes and is identified by its shiny smooth leaves with a boat shaped tip. Kentucky Bluegrass is slower to establish from seed, and blends well with fine ryegrass. View our Bluegrasses here.

Tall Fescue

Tall Fescue is a course textured, bunch-type grass that adapts to a wide range of soil types. Forming a deep root system, it is one of the most drought tolerant and wear resistant cool season grasses available. Tall Fescue does not blend well with other grasses and is recommended to have no less than 70% content in a seed blend. View our Tall Fescue Grasses here.

Warm Season Grasses are often coarser and require less watering in the hotter months, when they look their best.  They tend to brown off during winter and look best in the hotter months.

Kikuyu

Kikuyu is an aggressive warm season grass that is low maintenance with high wear tolerance. It spreads by stolons and rhizomes and can form a dense spongy turf. Kikuyu grass is also ideal for erosion control on hillsides and banks. View our Kikuyu Grasses here.

Couch

Couch is a warm season, low growing creeping grass that spreads rapidly by rhizomes. It has flat leaves and upright flowers and once established has good wear resistance and drought tolerance. The improved varieties will have greater density, finer leaves with better winter dormancy colour. View our Couch grasses here.

Zoysia

A tough variety of grass, Zoysia is a warm season grass that grows more slowly that other varieties, meaning less mowing.  It's a soft variety of warm season grass.  View our Zoysia Seed here.
