Top 10 Tips - Sowing Lawn Seed

Top 10 Tips - Sowing Lawn Seed

  1. Choose a lawn seed that is suitable for growing in your area/climate.  Learn about Warm and Cool Season Varieties here.
  2. Sow at right time of year – check what the best sowing time/soil temperature is for that seed.
  3. Try to avoid sowing on a very windy day as the seed can be blown away.
  4. Fertilise the area prior to sowing using a KickStart Fertiliser.
  5. Use the recommended sowing rate on the packet.
  6. Divide the seed into two parts. Sow the first amount in one direction, then sow the rest in the other direction for a more even spread.
  7. Gently water throughout the germination period. In hot/windy weather keep the soil continuously moist.
  8. Mow for the first time when it's at least 5cm high.
  9. Use a fertiliser for established lawns after about 9 weeks - See our All Season Reno Fertiliser here.
  10. If you are overseeding your existing lawn, as a general rule use half the amount of seed recommended for a new lawn.  See more details about how to overseed a lawn here.
