Sow Lawn Seed at the Optimum Sowing Time

Date: 25-03-2019

When you start your lawn project you want to give it the best chance at becoming a lush, green, beautiful lawn.

A big part of a successful lawn project is choosing the optimum time to sow your seed.  Choosing the optimum time will give your lawn the best chance to grow to its full potential.

Cool Season varieties are best sown in Autumn and Spring in temperatures below 25 degrees celsius.  These include varieties like Ryegrass, Bluegrass, Fine Fescue, Tall Fescue and Bentgrass.  At this is the time of year when soil temperatures and rainfall are more consistent and moderate in most states of Australia the cool season varieties will establish well.

Warm Season varieties prefer the heat and need to be sown in temperatures around 25 degrees celsius and above.  So Couch, Kikuyu, and especially the tropical Zoysia grass need heat to germinate and thrive.  Trying to sow these varieties in cooler areas of Australia will mean germination is either very slow or will not occur at all.

Here are some other considerations:

  • Factor in your location and the recommended seed for you area.  While you might have read up on Zoysia and love the sound of it, if you're in Tasmania it's a definite no.
  • Read our Seasonal State by State Suggestions on the blog.  You can see what our experts recommend for your area.
  • While it’s possible to sow seed in Summer, it’s far more challenging for a small seed to overcome extreme heat conditions to germinate.  Extra special care is needed for this time of year.
  • Monitor the weather and irrigate well if it's unexpectedly hot or windy.  Don't let your seed dry out!
  • Remember to allow around 8 weeks for establishment before a change of season occurs.  If you new lawn is well established with good growth and root structures it will better survive the change in temperatures.
