Description

Kickstart Starter Fertiliser

N:P:K 5 : 6 : 6 | Granular starter fertiliser | Available in 2.5kg, 5kg and 20kg

KickStart is a starter fertiliser made for lawn seed. Use it when sowing a new lawn or oversowing an existing one, to improve germination and build strong roots. It gives your new grass the right balance of nutrients for quick, healthy germination and establishment.

Suitable for all lawn seed varieties, including Ryegrass, Buffalo, Kikuyu, Couch, Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescues and Bentgrass.

Please note: This fertiliser cannot be sent to Western Australia.

Why do I need a starter fertiliser?

New seedlings have different needs from an established lawn. A starter fertiliser boosts germination, strengthens roots, and makes sure your young grass gets the right nutrients to establish and thrive. For the best results, always apply a starter fertiliser with your seed.

How is KickStart different from other lawn fertilisers?

Maintenance fertilisers like All Seasons and Super Green are high in nitrogen, which drives leaf growth and green colour in established lawns. KickStart has a more balanced mix, with extra phosphorus and potassium to support what new seedlings need most: germination and root growth.

What's in it?

Nitrogen (5%) provides a gentle feed for early leaf growth.
Phosphorus (6%) supports germination and strong root development.
Potassium (6%) builds healthy, resilient young plants.

Which size do I need?

At the recommended rate of 3kg per 100m², each bag covers approximately:

Bag sizeCovers
2.5kg80m²
5kg165m²
20kg665m²

How to apply

  1. Apply 3kg per 100m², up to two days before sowing or on the day you sow.
  2. For best results, use a broadcast fertiliser spreader for an even application. See our range of Earthway Spreaders here.
  3. Water in well.
  4. Sow your seed. For step-by-step instructions, see our How to Sow Lawn Seed guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a starter fertiliser?
It makes a big difference. New seedlings have small roots and need the right nutrients close by to germinate and establish quickly. A starter fertiliser gives them the best chance of growing into a thick, healthy lawn.

Can I use All Seasons or Super Green instead?
For sowing, KickStart is the better choice. Maintenance fertilisers are high in nitrogen for established lawns, while KickStart is balanced for germination and root growth. Switch to a maintenance fertiliser once your new lawn is established and being mowed regularly.

Can I use KickStart when oversowing?
Yes. Apply it to your existing lawn up to two days before sowing, or on the day you sow, and water in well.

Can I use KickStart on new instant turf?
Yes, you can.

When do I switch to a regular fertiliser?
Once your seed has germinated and you've started mowing regularly, usually around 6 to 8 weeks after sowing. From then on, follow a regular feeding program with All Seasons, Super Green or Nitro Green Iron Boost Fertiliser.

Will this burn my lawn?
Not when used correctly. Use the recommended rate, apply with a spreader for even coverage, and water in well.

Is it safe for kids and pets?
Once it's been watered in well and the area has dried, it's safe for your family and pets. Keep kids and pets off while you're applying, and store the bag out of their reach.

Can this be sent to WA?
No, sorry. Western Australia restricts phosphorus levels in fertiliser, and KickStart is above their limit.
