What time of the day should I water my lawn?

Date: 30-11-2017

Watering is one of the most misunderstood factors in lawn maintenance routines.

The goal of irrigating your lawn is very simple. It is to replace the moisture that is being lost due to evaporation. Any more or less will cause the lawn to suffer in times of stress.

The time of day that you water makes a real difference.  Follow one basic principal:

“Water your lawn when the least amount of water will be lost to evaporation.”

Water early in the morning before the heat of the day, especially prior to midday where the heat reaches its peak. This will ensure your water reaches down to the roots instead of getting vaporised. Also be sure to water more so along paths & kerbs as these areas dry out faster due to heat build up (being close to concrete).

Do not set your irrigation system so that all zones run for the same length of time as not all areas will require the same amount of coverage. It’s not only a waste of water but it also promotes plant diseases.

If you're in the Southern States of Australia and enjoy a cooler, wetter winter then generally, it’s not necessary to irrigate the lawn on a regular basis from May until October/November.

In other areas of Australia with hotter temperatures and conditions it may be necessary to water based on temperature and rainfall.

Remember that COOL and WARM season lawns have different watering needs.  Find out more here.
