Buffalo Lawns

Buffalo is a popular lawn type across Australia.  It's a warm season grass that's available throughout Australia from Instant Turf companies.  It's sometimes called Sir Walter, Matilda or Sapphire.  At Great Aussie Lawns we occasionally get enquiries about Buffalo grass.  See below for answers to our most frequently asked questions:

Can I buy Buffalo Seed?

Buffalo grass is not available in seed form. You have to purchase instant turf or sprigs (not available through Great Aussie Lawns). But the good news is, there are lots of alternatives to Buffalo Lawns that you can purchase through Great Aussie Lawns.

What are the alternatives to Buffalo Grass?

There are plenty of great alternatives to Buffalo.  When you buy as seed you also save money as a lawn planted from seed is much cheaper to buy.  As Buffalo is a warm season grass the warm season alternatives are couch and kikuyu.

Overseeding Your existing Buffalo Grass

Overseeding your current lawn thickens and rejuvenates it.  If you have a Buffalo lawn and it needs a boost you can use an alternative seed.  Depending on your location and the time of the year you can overseed with either a Warm season or a Cool Season grass.  If you're in the Southern (cooler) states of Australia you can use something like a Tall Fescue seed in Autumn.  Remember to allow enough time for your chosen cool season grass to establish before the summer heat.

If you're in the warmer states of Australia and it's Spring or Summer you can oversow your Buffalo grass with a Couch or Kikuyu Seed.

Fertilising Your Buffalo Lawn

Buffalo lawns go into dormancy over winter so come Spring they need a big boost with a fertilise!  Use a High Analysis fertiliser like our Renovator or our Gold Pro Controlled Release fertilisers which are high in Nitrogen and will deliver a much needed colour injection.
