How to Buy Lawn Seed Online

It’s easy to buy grass seed online when you know what you need!  Here’s a checklist of questions to ask yourself while you’re researching your lawn:

What's your location?

You want your grass seed to germinate and establish well in your area and climate.  Grass Seed for Lawns is broken up into two types:  Cool Season and Warm Season grasses.

If you’re in Australia’s warmer States you’ll be looking at Warm Season Varieties like Kikuyu and Couch.  They’ll thrive in warmer weather and when sown require warmth in the soil for them to germinate and grow.

Further South, where the seasons are more defined we can use a Warm Season grass in Spring and Summer and a Cool Season grass seed in Autumn.

In Tasmania it's best to stick to cool season grasses to grow a lawn successfully.

What time of year is it?

In Australia, Spring and Autumn are generally the best time to sow your grass seed for your new lawn but depending on your climate this can vary.

Remember wherever you are in the country, after sowing you’ll need a couple of months establishment time for the seed to germinate, so allow enough time to get it growing before any significant season change!

What kind of use will the lawn get?

Spend some time thinking about the type of use your lawn will get.  Do you have kids riding bikes or playing cricket?  Do you have animals?  If you do you'll need to look for a harder wearing lawn like Kikuyu or Couch.  Looking for a fine leaf grass that's more of a show lawn?  Look at varieties like Ryegrass or Fescue.

What sun and shade does will your lawn get?

Identify any areas where large trees or buildings overshadow your lawn area.  It’s possible to plant a mix of grass seed types for a shady area.  Our Sun and Shade Blend is designed to grow in full sun and medium shade in most gardens.

Measure up!

Knowing how much seed to buy can be confusing and buying too much or too little can be expensive or just plain annoying!  We’ve made it easy to calculate your lawn seed sowing rate (or how much you need!) with this handy blog post

It’s important to note that at Great Aussie Lawns we recommend you use certified “named varieties” as opposed to cheaper inferior lawn seed that can be found in general purpose stores.  Using quality seed will provide you with the best outcome. Seeds with low purity and germination may be cheaper but will often cost you more money in the long run!  We use only QUALITY seed with the highest germination rates.

Don’t forget the fertiliser!

To ensure successful germination it’s essential to apply a starter fertiliser when sowing your grass seed.  Click here to view our Landscape Range Starter Fertiliser.
