Caring for Your Lawn in the Winter Months

Date: 05-07-2022

WINTER IS HERE! Here is what you can do for your lawn in the cooler months:

In cooler states lawns are growing at a slower rate right now but that doesn’t mean you should forget it. Follow these steps to care for your lawn in the winter months and it'll thank you come Spring!

1. Keep your lawn green with our Cool Season Blends

Cool season grasses love the winter months and take advantage. Cool season grasses can be oversown into existing lawns during cooler months.  The most common types of cool season grasses are perennial ryegrass, fine fescue, and tall fescue. These will all establish during the season, though germination may be slower.

2. Use herbicides for your weeds while they are still young

Winter is when those pesky weeds can show up. Right now is the perfect time to deal with them while they're young. Use herbicides to remove invaders from your lawns.

3. Raise mowing heights as growth slows down

In the cooler months, it is best to take less off the length when mowing. Raise the height of your mower blades to allow more sun into the plant.

4. Slow down on the water

In colder states is little chance that your lawn will dry out during the winter season. Overwatering your lawn in the winter months can make it more susceptible to fungi. Water your lawn only if you live in warmer areas and the grass appears dry.

5. Rake up fallen leaves

Your grass requires as much sunlight as possible and fallen autumn leaves will block this very important light. Keeping your lawn free from leaves in the winter months is good for your lawn’s overall health.
