Winter Lawn Tips - Australia wide

Date: 03-06-2019

The seasons are changing around Australia.  While most lawns are lower maintenance in Winter you'll need to pay some attention to ensure your lawn still looks good when Spring rolls around.

Fly around Australia with us and see how Winter affects lawns in the different states of Australia.

Victoria

  • Temperatures cool considerably in late Autumn and you can expect Warm season lawns (like Buffalo, Kikuyu and Couch) to go into dormancy meaning your lawn looks less green and growth slows down.
  • Now is a good time to aerate compacted soil.  Click here to see how.

NSW/ACT

  • Frosts can be damaging.  Take care not to walk ok frosty lawns.  A quick water can help to melt the ice first thing in the morning!

Queensland

  • It's warmer up North so it's still possible to sow grasses later in the season.
  • Get in a fertilise before the temps cool too much!
  • Avoid over watering in winter.

South Australia

  • Lawn repairs can be undertaken over the winter months. Level out bumps and hollows and remove coarse grasses.
  • Growth will have slowed so mowing heights can be raised.  This provides protection for the winter.  Longer length allows the lawn to retain more nutrients to survive the tougher conditions.

Tasmania

  • Rake away leaves that have fallen so they don't swamp your lawn.
  • Now is a good time to aerate compacted soil.  Click here to see how.

WA

  •  Continue to sow lawn seed and fertilise unless temperatures drop dramatically.
  • When growth slows raise mowing heights.  More nutrients for the lawn to survive the winter.

NT

  •  If weather is particularly dry be sure to water your lawn when it needs it.  Even warm season grasses need irrigation.

We'll be counting down the weeks until Spring time, our favourite time of the Lawn Calendar Year.
