Natural or Synthetic Lawn? Which is best?

Date: 23-03-2016

The look and feel of Natural Grass vs Synthetic Turf:

Artificial and natural turf feel quite different, whether you’re playing sport, lying out to read the paper or enjoying a picnic.  The natural cushioning of a real lawn will quite different to an artificial surface, plus from a visual perspective, natural grass gets the thumbs up vs it’s shiny competitor.

Natural Grass makes a cooler garden:

Made of plastics and synthetics, artificial turf will warm up quickly in the sun, while a natural grass has a cooling effect on the garden temperature, bringing the temp down (crucial in those hot summer months).

Synthetic lawn has a shorter lifespan than some think:

Artificial Turf has a projected lifespan of around 8 years, and some only around 4 years.  Add in extra costs for removal, disposal and replacement.

Natural Lawn is great for kids:

There’s nothing like being outside with the family, kicking around the footy and having fun under the sprinkler in summer.  While natural lawn provides a soft and cushiony surface, rubber and sand in synthetic lawns can be abrasive if there’s a fall.

Synthetic lawn needs maintaining:

While you might not be mowing it, an artificial lawn needs sweeping for weeds, leaves, sticks and other debris, plus the addition of infill and restoration from wear and tear.

Animals and general mess!

Let’s face it, regardless of what kind of lawn you have cleaning up after animals is no fun.  But, dealing with stains from animal droppings, urine, vomit plus other mess like chewing  gum and saliva from a natural lawn is a lot easier.  Cleaning up and hosing through a natural lawn makes a much more hygienic surface for all.

Weeding:

Believe it or not you DO have to weed your synthetic lawn.  Weeds will find their way into even a synthetic surface and can look more obvious that in a natural lawn.

Cost:

The rate for most Lawn Seed blends is 3-4kg per 100m2.  Our Greenland blend (a good quality mix of tall fescue and fine rye grass for a beautiful lawn) is $90 for 10 kgs, whereas the same area laid with artificial lawn would cost $75 per square metre alone!

Environmental:

While synthetic grass requires no mowing or watering, it does have an impact on the environment.  Synthetic grass won’t filter air or water pollutants and doesn’t allow natural water infiltration into the surrounding garden and trees.

General Wellbeing:

Studies have shown that natural grass has a positive emotional effect on humans, plus it's important to add how visually pleasing a real lawn and garden can be.
