Description

Advanced Seed Bentgrass Penncross

Designed for extensively managed golf greens and tees and lawn bowling surfaces.

Thrives as a permanent turf in cooler regions of Australia and performs well in Northern areas with good management.

Aggressiveness, vigour and wear tolerance make Penncross a natural for greens, tees and fairways. When it was first introduced, Penncross received some criticism for being too vigorous and difficult to manage, however turf care professionals now find that by reducing water and fertiliser inputs, Penncross is more manageable and yet, still crowds out Poa annua and other weeds.

It’s ability to perform under a wide range of conditions makes this bentgrass adaptable virtually anywhere.

In the US, Golf Course architects have specified Penncross for areas of extreme cold and heat, and Penncross has survived humidity where couch has been the standard.

Sowing Rates & Establishment:

Penncross can be seeded from 0.25-0.5 kilograms per 100sqm depending on the application. Cover seed to a depth not exceeding 6mm and keep seedlings moist until well rooted. Germination will take place in 7-15 days depending on soil temperatures and may be reduced by soaking or pre-germinating seeds prior to sowing.

Oversow existing turf surfaces at about half the new seeding rate.

Fertiliser Rates:

starter fertiliser is recommended with all new seed sowing. When mowing commences switch to a regular maintenance fertiliser (like Landscape Range All Season Reno or Landscape Range Gold Pro at least once every season.

Maintenance:

The first mowing may be expected within 30 days, or when the plants have sufficiently rooted. Mow at a height of 19mm or lower until turf is established. Limited use of the area can be expected in 6 weeks.

Penncross performs best in soils with a pH of 5.5 to 8. It has a moderate nitrogen requirement with 0.5-1 kilogram of actual N per 100 square metres per year adequate in most situations.  Penncross’ optimum mowing height is 4.5mm to 8mm but can be adjusted higher or lower depending upon maintenance practices and intended use.  Penncross performs best on a sandy soil and tolerates clay soils with adequate drainage.

Generally most bentgrasses do not perform well in wet areas, however, Penncross can tolerate saturated soil conditions for short periods of time.
