Should I choose Zoysia for my New Lawn?

Zoysia is just one of these and it can be a very popular choice due to its low maintenance and success in Tropical parts of Australia. Though care must be taken depending on your location in Australia as it's not as suitable for non-tropical areas.
Popular Features of Zoysia Grass
Zoysia is often chosen as it's probably one of the most wear resistant grasses around. It's drought tolerant and creates a very presentable lawn. It's well suited to year round, warm, tropical areas and has a reasonably fine leaf, with less requirement for mowing and watering. Price: It can cost around $150 a kilo and at certain times of the year it may be unavailable.
Best Areas to grow Zoysia Lawn Seed
If you're looking at Lawn seed and trying to work out what type of seed will grow best for your lawn project, it's very important to consider your climate and region when choosing Zoysia. As it's a tropical lawn seed it will be reasonably easy to germinate and grow in Northern Parts of Australia and down to Northern NSW. It requires consistent heat to retain it's green colour.
If you're located further south in Australia it can go into dormancy much earlier than other warm season grasses (like couches) during the Autumn and winter. Though it might germinate in the hotter months, as soon as the soil temperature drops it will discolour and disappear - which is why other alternatives shown below would be recommended in Southern NSW, Victoria, Southern WA and Tasmania.
Alternatives to Zoysia
If Zoysia isn't suitable for your area then one of our newer, improved varieties of Couchgrass is recommended and more cost effective.
With the following you’ll get a great result and have full cover in about three months. While some of the older couch varieties could take over gardens beds, these newer varieties (as listed below) are much better and denser without taking over the garden.
